During recent maintenance work on the chiller plant room at a large server room in the centre of London, things started to go wrong and temperatures started rising fast!

The maintenance contractor was faced with overheating servers and potential failure due to the unexpected problems.

The maintenance work was started due to an ongoing problem where several air conditioning compressors had failed; however things really started to heat up when further failures were experienced. All Seasons Hire rushed to site and things were cooled down fast when they installed 20 water cooled 22000btu portable air conditioning pack units. Commercial Director Andy Hamilton stated "the project had gone unexpectedly wrong due to the failure of the fixed chiller units. However we were able to get to site very fast and within 2 hours we had stabilized the server room temperatures. We would normally have installed a portable chiller unit connected to air handling units but there were time and space constraints on site and so we decided to use our water cooled pack units. They are perfect for server room applications, they are water cooled split units capable of delivering 22000btu of cooling and the heat exchanger can be placed as far as 30mtrs from the indoor air conditioning unit".

Why close down during boiler or chiller plant room refurbishment?pdf download

Many older buildings including private and public sector properties are faced with inconvenient and costly closure during essentialboiler and chiller maintenance and refurbishment. As an example it has always been a rush to get school refurbishment work completed during the holiday period.

One recent example of where closure would have been very costly was the discovery of asbestos during the refurbishment of a large hotel boiler plant room. Closure was out of the question, finding a temporary solution was essential!

All Seasons Hire has the perfect solution to overcome the problem of occupied refurbishment. In the case of the asbestos issue at the large hotel, All Seasons installed and commissioned a 550kW portable boiler unit complete with heating and hot water supplies. The 550kW boiler was connected into existing pipe-work via the internal plate heat exchangers ensuring that contamination from the existing heating system did not cause problems fro the temporary boiler plant. Needless to say the installation was transparent with the hotel and its guests completely unaware that the refurbishment work was taking place.

All Seasons Hire was recently asked to help heat the water for a swimming pool situated in a large sports complex in Hampshire. The newly refurbished swimming complex made up of several pools holds a total of 490,000 litres of water; with the opening deadline critical the task was to heat the water to 25 degrees and completely fill the pool allowing for the internal heating pumps to take over. The water was heated using a 500kW All Seasons Hire Mobile Boiler. However to ensure that the temperature was maintained throughout the 24 hour filling process the water was recalculated from the pool via a separate heat exchanger allowing for the water to maintain a constant level. The water was heated via two independent heat exchangers situated in the Mobile Boiler; this method enabled the pool to be filled without any risk of contamination allowing for the pool to be filled in line with the targeted time scale. All Seasons Commercial Director Andy Hamilton stated “whilst this project was fairly straight forward we need to ensure that the boiler set up was spot on and the configuration perfectly balanced so that we could fill the pool at the correct flow rate and temperature. When workmen in London accidentally fractured a gas main, a nearby residential care home was left with no heating or hot water, and no indication when the problem would be resolved.
The duty engineer made a call to All Seasons Hire who immediately despatched an Oil Fired 250kw Portable Boiler, together with flexible hoses, pipe connections and electrical cables.
Commercial Director Andrew Hamilton explained: "There was no time to carry out a site survey so we loaded the delivery vehicle with enough flexible hose to cover any eventuality. We also sent a separate vehicle loaded with portable oil filled radiators to provide immediate heat whilst the Mobile Boiler was installed."
The initial call to All Seasons Hire was placed at 2-30pm, by 5-30pm the same day All Seasons Hire were on site and the installation was underway.

All Seasons Hire were recently called on to provide and install cooling for a major Town Hall server room. Things started to heat up when an existing system failed and parts were unattainable for several weeks. The response was very fast and within 24 hours from receiving the call All Seasons Hire had completed the installation and commissioning of a 100kW chiller complete with internal air handling units and all associated pipe work. A large Hospital in Kent recently found things heating up fast following the breakdown of their main Air Conditioning Chiller; a temporary solution was needed as quickly as possible! The failed air conditioning system served the operating theatres, the rapid rise in temperature threatened to close down the theatres with a potential risk that many operations would have been cancelled. All Seasons Hire provides Portable Air Conditioning for an IT Suite Re-Furbishementpdf download

A building contractor was recently awarded a major building refurbishment project for an IT company; it soon realised that temporary Air Conditioning would be required whilst the buildings existing Water Chillers were removed and replaced.

The Air Conditioning Chillers were situated on the roof in a re-cessed well area and after a site survey by All Seasons Hire it was decided that the only practical temporary connection points for a Portable Chiller was in the roof area by the existing plant.
The Portable Chiller pipe work had to be run 20 metres up the side of the building then a further 15 metres across a pitched roof and into the Chiller well.
All Seasons Hire provided a full turn key Temporary Chiller installation to the client including the supply of the scaffolding, a cherry picker and all the required connections into the clients existing Air Conditioning system.
“The client asked All Seasons Hire to complete the job within one hour of the old Air Conditioning Chiller being disconnected to the temporary equipment being on line so a test run was carried out prior to the work commencing”.
All Seasons Hire supplied and installed a 320kW Trane Hire Chiller for the project and ran 4” Chiller pipe work.
The site also required power so a 350Kva generator was also supplied together with cables and distribution both to the Air Conditioning Chiller and into the building.

All Seasons Hire provides Portable Boilers for Docklands Hot Water System:pdf download

All Seasons Hire was recently called on to supply a temporary Boiler solution for a large office block in London. When the Boiler Plant Room failed at the office block in docklands the building was left with no Heating or Hot Water.

With summer fast approaching The Heating system was not too much of an issue; however the building was operational twenty four hours a day and included several apartments so it was essential to get the domestic hot water back on line.
All Seasons Hire received a call from the client and within a few hours an engineer was on site to carry out a detailed survey.
The Boiler Plant Room was on the sixth floor with no external wall; also the building had no adjacent land to site a largeTemporary Boiler. The only available space was an underground car park and the Boiler Plant room itself, this ruled out the traditional option of supplying a temporary Oil or Gas Fired Boiler.
All Seasons Hire recommended the supply of three 22kW Portable Electric Boilers coupled to a domestic hot water heat exchanger.
The Portable Boiler was delivered same day, taken up to the sixth floor using the goods lift and connected into the buildings hot water system.

Chiller Hire from All Seasons Hire keeps Cinderella on Ice on the Road:pdf download

Chillers supplied by All Seasons Hire are not only used on Air Conditioning and Process Cooling projects. Over the past seven months All Seasons Hire has supplied Commercial Chillers for the Ice Skating spectacular Cinderella on Ice. The UKwide production is currently travelling to its final shows pending the World Tour starting in the Far East during June 2009.

A question that is often asked is whether the rink is actually made of real ice? It most certainly is! All Seasons Hire provides the low temperature Trane Chillers that produces and maintains approximately 14 tonnes of ice which is kept at a working temperature of minus 15 degrees. All Seasons Hire has to keep to the strict timetable ensuring that the ice rink is ready in time for rehearsal skating.

The work on piecing the rink together starts with the base and sides of the rink which is made of marine reinforced plywood and waterproof timber for the edging. A 52ft x 52ft heavy-duty pool liner is laid ready for the Ice mat. 10 miles of pipe work is now laid inside on the liner and connected to header pipes before being spaced out across the base of the floor and secured. The spacing is very important and must be exact or sections of the rink will not freeze. After everything is connected on the stage, the header pipes are then connected to the All Seasons Hire Trane Chillers. Four tonnes of crushed ice is spread over the pipes; this gives the rink a head start in the ice making process. Overnight the Ice rink is sprayed carefully every 15 minutes with water until the ice is approximately three inches thick. Whilst the ice spraying is taking place, the production company technicians work on getting the sets, lighting and sound in place, (the show wardrobe managers have to take care of more than 120 costumes which will be used during the performance of the Ice show. Once the rink is completed, the surface temperature is constantly monitored day and night throughout the production. During the interval and after each performance of the show, the surface is scraped and resurfaced with hot water to keep it as smooth as possible. Director Mark Crabtree stated; “we work flat out on each of the ice rink installations ensuring that we make and maintain the Ice ready for the show. If our Chillers or the installation goes wrong the show can’t go on! We normally use two Trane low temperature chillers however we always keep a stand-bye Hire Chiller ready in case of unexpected failure.
